One Morning in Kenmore …
This morning Katherine and I had a conversation that went vaguely like this:
Katherine: It's 65° out. Should I open the windows before I leave you on my errands?
[I will look at the thermometer.]
me: Did you say 65º?
Katherine: Yes.
me: My office says the coldest place in Kenmore [our backyard] is 55°.
Katherine: Oh. I looked at my [Apple] watch.
[The Apple branded Ouija® board on her wrist strikes again! (It bites me, too.)]
me: oh.
me: At 55° going to 75° with sunshine, we're good for the windows open. Even when it's 60º and dark out, it doesn't get cold that fast. So open them.
"'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman"
They say that a person with a clock always knows what time it is, but a person who has two is never quite sure. Of course, that dates from before the Internet and atomic clocks. Now, radio station WWV (with its siblings WWVB & WWVH), Internet protocol NTP, and GPS all provide atomic clock-based time. Just in this house, we have three off-the-shelf clocks all syncing to WWVB, various desktops (including MacOS, iOS, Windows and Linux), tablets, phones, and watches all syncing to NTP, and our 2019 MINI (Purr More) syncs to GPS.(Our 2023 MIN doesn't have a nav system.)
So pretty much everything except kitchen appliances agree on the time.
The Ticktockman would be proud of modern technology.
If you don’t like our temperature, wait a minute.
One wishes it was so easy with the outside temperature. Part of the problem is unlike time which is consistent around the globe. The temperature is not the same in Kenmore, Washington as in Kenmore NY, Kenmore Queensland, Kenmore Virginia (2 of them!), Fenway–Kenmore in Boston or …
And even if you know which which place you're referring to, you don't know what location your source is using (nor when they looked!). Looking at the Kenmore (Washington) temperature on reputable websites, I'm seeing a 9° spread in the current temperature.
Quite frankly, the only readings I have any trust in are the two thermometers I have in the backyard reporting remotely to my office. One is a standalone Ambient Weather Station, the other is an outdoor sensor for the Mitsubishi HVAC unit we installed in 2015. Those two are generally about a degree off from each other, which is quite reasonable for consumer grade thermometer. When they say our backyard is the coldest place in Kenmore, I believe it.
Suffice to say said I refer to the Weather app on the Apple Watch as a Ouija board. I think I can get better accuracy from the recent analog hardware device I bought (and it doesn't even report numbers):
